William Powell AM and Petitions Committee accept petition on Prince Philip Hospital

May 23, 2012 4:59 PM

William Powell AM, Chair of the National Assembly for Wales' Petitions Committee, has today accepted a petition from the Sosppan Campaign on the future of Prince Philip District General Hospital in Llanelli.

William Powell, Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for Mid and West Wales, said:

"It is a great pleasure for me to accept this petition with my committee colleagues on such an important issue for both Llanelli and the wider Mid and West Wales region.

The Sosppan Campaigners has done a superb job in making this petition a reality, and I pay tribute to their dedication in bringing this matter to the Committee. The fact that they have managed to obtain over 24,000 signatures is testament to both their commitment and the strength of feeling in Llanelli.

As we saw today, and with a similarly successful demonstration over Bronglais District General Hospital back in February, the people of Mid and West Wales have lost confidence in the ability of Hywel Dda Local Health Board to effectively deliver the essential life-saving services they require. As a result I give my pledge, along with my Committee colleagues, to give this petition very careful consideration. This will include close engagement with the Health and Social Services Minister Lesley Griffiths, especially in the light of the fears of hospital downgrading, which are widespread in the Hywel Dda LHB area.''
