Welsh Liberal Democrat AM for Mid and West Wales, William Powell has today pledged his support for the National Federation for Women's Institutes-Wales' mandate on local libraries.

During their recent AGM the NFWI pledged their commitment to the cause and will be urging the Government to maintain support for local libraries.

They will be campaigning to raise awareness of the risks facing many local libraries and working hard to drum up support.

Mr Powell commented

: "I am delighted that the NFWI have shown such overwhelming support for this worthy cause.

"Libraries play an essential part in our communities as local centres for learning and information.

"In my own region I've been involved in campaigning on libraries since an initial campaign to save three Powys libraries in 2005/6- Llanfair Caereinion, Llanwrtyd Wells and Talgarth.

"I will continue to champion any campaign to save Wales' libraries and the NFWI Wales can count on my full support."

Margaret Lloyd Jones, Chair of the National Federation of Women's Institutes-Wales said

:

"WI members clearly recognise the worth that local library services bring to communities, often in isolated areas, and we will now work hard to prevent such services being removed from the areas where they are often needed most".
