William Powell, Welsh Liberal Democrat Spokesperson on Rural Affairs, had warmly welcomed the Minister's decision to set up a short-term Task & Finish Group to explore alternative approaches to Enterprise Zones in Newtown, Llandrindod Wells and Brecon.
William Powell, Assembly Member for Mid and West Wales, said:
"An effective strategy for business growth has the potential to really benefit Powys and I very warmly welcome the decision of the Minister to set up a short-term Task & Finish Group to aid its development.
Businesses in rural Wales have very specific needs and I am pleased to a see that a number of bespoke solutions will be developed by the Group which are sensitive to Powys' local economic circumstances and growth challenges.
I am also reassured that many of the Group's members have direct experience of doing business in Mid Wales and I have the utmost confidence in their ability to deliver outstanding results.
I would also like to congratulate Cllr. Wynne Jones (PCC Cabinet Member for Regeneration) and Lesley Kirkpatrick (Head of Regeneration and Development at PCC) for the critical role that they played in developing the original proposal."
Simon Buckley, Chief Executive of Carmarthenshire's Evan-Evans Brewery and the proprietor of The George Hotel Brecon, added:
"The Welsh Assembly Government announcement of Local growth Zones is an innovative method of stimulating local business. The tourism industry needs support now, and many businesses such as my own have shelved extensive plans for job preservation and creation as a result of the lack of support.
We need this to become an action plan rather than a talking point, and I hope that early in the new financial year we get an announcement that makes the talk reality. Support needs to be available before the summer season kicks in.
Brecon needs help, and needs it now. We need to stimulate the local economy, and we need to secure local Jobs. Tourism is a vital part of that equation."
