‘Wales is ideally placed to co-host Euro 2020’ – William Powell AM
2012 Mai 29 5:30 PM
William Powell, Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for Mid and West Wales, has called on the First Minister to support a joint Celtic Nations bid to host the 2020 UEFA European Football Championship.
William Powell AM, said:
"The interest shown by the football federations of Wales, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland in holding the 2020 UEFA European Football Championship represents an important first step on the path towards making a joint Celtic Nations bid a reality.
Wales is ideally placed to co-host Euro 2020, but such a bid can only be a success if the respective Governments of Wales, Scotland, Northen Ireland and the Republic of Ireland are fully behind it and work together to ensure the best possible case can be made to UEFA. Leo Varadkar TD, Irish Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport recently gave the idea his backing, when addressing the British Irish Parliamentary Assembly. I have since taken the matter up personally with Phil Pritchard, President of the Football Association of Wales - and know that he is putting his full weight behind the bid.
As the critical next step, I have today called on the First Minister to outline the specific steps his Government is willing to take to make such a bid a success. Carwyn Jones welcomed the proposal, but I will continue to press him on the issue in the months ahead."
