Reopening of Russian market a great benefit to Wales – William Powell AM

2012 Tachwedd 23 3:52 PM

William Powell AM, Welsh Liberal Democrat Rural Affairs Spokesperson, has congratulated DEFRA on their landmark agreement with the Russian Government which will see their borders once again open to British beef and lamb produce.

William Powell, Assembly Member for Mid and West Wales, said:

"This landmark agreement is great news for the Welsh beef and lamb industry. For too long the Russian market has been closed to our farmers following the BSE crisis, and I want to congratulate the UK coalition government on their successful negotiations.

This agreement closely follows the successful pork exports negotiations with China back in May. Taken together these deals potentially represent around £130m to the UK agricultural economy over the next three years and democrats our commitment to the world leading standard of Welsh and UK produce."

Wyn Williams, Group Procurement Manager for Dundia, added:

"This is great news for the Welsh meat industry. The Russian market offers us a huge potential to increase our exports and further enhance the Welsh meat industry."
