William Powell AM, Chair of the National Assembly for Wales' Petitions Committee, has today accepted a petition calling for CCTV systems to installed in all Welsh slaughterhouses 'to help vets with better regulation and monitoring, to provide footage for training and retraining, to deter some of the animal welfare abuses filmed by Animal Aid, and to provide evidence for prosecutions should they be necessary.'
William Powell, Welsh Liberal Democrat Member for Mid and West Wales, said:
"Wales can proudly claim to have some of the world's best agricultural produce. We have only achieved this reputation because of the quality of what we produce and the trust people have in the welfare standards of our meat industry.'
While the potential exists for mandatory CCTV to further enhance this reputation, we must ensure that it does not place an unsustainable burden on the industry it serves. The potential sale of Vion has shown us how fragile the Welsh meat industry currently is. Similarly, the decline in the number of micro abattoirs across Wales over recent years - and the associated surge in food miles - means that we must be mindful of the impacts of reform, in terms of cost and viability.
I look forward to these matters being fully considered by the Petitions Committee, together with the powerful submissions received from Animal Aid. We will engage fully with the Welsh Government, to consider these important issues in the wider context."
We call on the National Assembly to urge the Welsh Government to introduce mandatory CCTV in slaughterhouses to help vets with better regulation and monitoring, to provide footage for training and retraining, to deter some of the animal welfare abuses filmed by Animal Aid, and to provide evidence for prosecutions should they be necessary.
