Welsh Government Minister refuses to act to address sustainability concerns

2012 Rhagfyr 5 2:37 PM

William Powell AM, Welsh Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Environment and Sustainable Development, has expressed his regret that the Minister for Education and Skills has refused to take action to address concerns over the perceived lack of focus on Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship (ESDGC) within the Welsh curriculum.

William Powell, Assembly Member for Mid and West Wales, said:

"When I first raised this issue with the Minister in October he stated that he had seen no evidence of my concerns. However, in last month's Sustainable Development Annual Report Peter Davies, the Commissioner for Sustainable Futures, expressed the same concerns and called on the Welsh Government to ask Estyn to carry out an updated remit study of the program.

As a School Governor myself, I know how inspiring this area of the curriculum can be, when well delivered. However, I am both concerned and disappointed that the Minister has once again refused to act to address this issue across Wales in this afternoon's Plenary session. Education has a key role to play in Wales' sustainable future and is too important to be dealt with in such a dismissive manner."
