2014 Ionawr 29 3:51 PM

Robert Owen Credit UnionWilliam Powell, Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for Mid and West Wales, will visit the Robert Owen Community Banking Fund in Newtown on Thursday 30th January with Edwina Hart AM, Welsh Government Minister for Economy, Science and Transport.

The visit follows an invite from Mr Powell to Mrs Hart to visit the Montgomeryshire Credit Union to see the great work they do for their local community first hand.

William Powell AM said:

"I am delighted that the Minister has agreed to join me on a visit to the Robert Owen Credit Union in Newtown and I am grateful to Robert Owen Fund staff for being willing to host our visit.

"Credit Unions offer communities an alternative means though which to access money and are already having a meaningful impact on the rural Welsh economy.

"The Robert Owen Community Banking Fund is a fine example of such a Credit Union and I am pleased to see it go from success to success in recent months.

"Given the significance of Robert Owen himself as a hero of the Cooperative movement, I was pleased to accept a petition in my role as Chair of the National Assembly for Wales' Petitions Committee which called for the renaming of Cardiff Airport to 'Robert Owen International Airport of Wales'".

  • Wording of the Robert Owen Airport Petition:

We call on the Welsh Assembly Government to rename Cardiff Airport the Robert Owen International Airport of Wales after the Welsh hero of the Cooperative Movement.

Additional information: For Wales to become truly international a modern airport is essential. If the airport and surrounding enterprise zone marketed itself under the Robert Owen brand it could have global appeal and significantly boost the surrounding area by creating jobs and increasing trade.

Date Petition first considered by Committee: 21 January 2014
