Climate Change Targets must be included in Future Generations Bill - William Powell AM

2015 Chwefror 5 11:43 AM

William Powell AM, on behalf of the Welsh Liberal Democrats, has today urged the National Assembly 's Environment & Sustainability Committee to accept amendments to the Well-Being of Future Generations Bill which would put clear climate change targets onto the face of the Bill.

Commenting ahead of the Committee today, William Powell, Party Spokesperson for Environment and Rural Affairs, said:

"My Party believes it is essential that targets for combating climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions are included in the Bill to make it a meaningful piece of legislation that can bring about real change."

Climate change is arguably the single biggest threat to future generations, and I maintain that you cannot ensure the well-being of future generations without also setting these targets. The Minister is reluctant to set binding targets within this Bill but, without them, the Welsh Government will continue to fail in its duty to tackle climate change."

These calls are in line with the Sustainable Development Alliance's Campaign to 'Build a Better Bill' which calls for the Bill to minimise Wales' contribution to global climate change by setting robust targets to reduce greenhouse gases.
