On 5th May 2016, I was the Welsh Liberal Democrat National Assembly Candidate for both Carmarthen East & Dinefwr and also the Mid & West Wales Region.

In the 2011 - 2016 National Assembly, I was the Assembly Member for the Mid & West Region. I was also the Welsh Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for the Environment, Sustainable Development & Rural Affairs.

    The Welsh Liberal Democrats have welcomed the news that the UK Government has confirmed £27,000 of funding per year from 2017-18 until 2019-20 towards the Lloyd George Museum in Llanystumdwy in North Wales.

    The news follows an ongoing campaign from the Welsh Liberal Democrats who had been calling on the Welsh Government to make the Lloyd George Museum part of the National Museum of Wales in order to safeguard its future. The Plaid Cymru led Gwynedd Council had planned to withdraw funding for the museum in its 2016/17 budget, but announced last month that the decision would be deferred until 2017.

    The Welsh Liberal Democrats have uncovered shocking figures showing that Hywel Dda Health Board is routinely failing breast cancer patients.

    According to Welsh Government guidance, a person suspected of having cancer should receive their first outpatient appointment within 10 working days of their initial referral.

    The Welsh Liberal Democrats have delivered more for communities than the other opposition parties put together, William Powell, Assembly Member for Mid & West Wales has said highlighting the party's key policies featured in the Annual Budget.

    The final vote on the Welsh Government's Annual Budget took place earlier this week. The Welsh Liberal Democrats abstained, allowing the budget to pass, in exchange for securing backing for a number of policies. These include: the Pupil Premium which means every school receives £1,150 per pupil on free school meals, a Young Persons' Bus Pass, and 5,000 new apprenticeships.

    Progress continues to be made with the new integrated health care centre development due to be opened in Cardigan. The centre is set to provide health and social care services, together with third sector organisations, in brand new purpose-built premises.

    Addressing the First Minister this week, William Powell, Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for Mid & West Wales, highlighted the importance of the new centre being fully accessible by public transport.

    William Powell, Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for Mid & West Wales and Spokesperson for Rural Affairs, has urged the Deputy Minister for Farming and Food, Rebecca Evans AM to safeguard local authority farms and smallholdings in Wales from potential sell-off.

    William raised the issue during a recent scrutiny session with the Deputy Minister, and spoke of the vital resource which local authority smallholdings provide in enabling young people who aspire to enter the farming industry to have access to the land.

    William is the Welsh Liberal Democrat AM for Mid & West Wales. In this capacity he has been a strong voice for local people within the National Assembly since 2011, taking up issues on behalf of many people within the area and speaking for the party on the environment, farming and the rural economy. He has led on major campaigning issues, such as looking to save the Dyfed Powys Police Helicopter, on recruitment of nurses, and urging the UK Government to apply to the European Union Solidarity Fund to support communities who have suffered from recent floods.
    William, a livestock farmer, is an qualified languages teacher and graduate of Pembroke College, Oxford.

    The Welsh Liberal Democrats have pledged to introduce a carbon impact assessment to all new laws, so that assessments can be made of their environmental impact.

    Announcing proposals they would introduce if in Government, the party also said it would publish a Carbon Budget alongside the Welsh Government Budget each year, ensuring that Wales remains on track to meet emission reduction targets for Wales and enabling decision-makers to have a clear idea of what impact decisions would have on the environment.
