Shadow Education Minister welcomes Qualifications Review debate
Aled Roberts, Welsh Liberal Democrat Shadow Education Minister, has welcomed the Assembly debate on the proposed Qualifications Review.
Commenting, Aled said:
"In the light of numerous reports recently it is obvious that there is a need to re-examine the education system in Wales.
"However, we need to be careful about what we are doing and why we are doing it - if it is simply to train children to pass tests then it is flawed. We need to equip children and young people with the qualifications and the skills for life - qualifications are only part of the process.
"Employers need to understand the value of a prospective employee's qualifications but they also need to know that the person in front of them has the basic skills needed to function as a part of their organisation - social skills, inter-personal skills and a good grasp of reading, writing and arithmetic.
"I welcome this review but would impress on the Deputy Minister the need to link his portfolio responsibilities with those of the Education Minister and ensure that the outcome of this review - a year from now - will lead to not only better qualified, but better educated and better equipped young people ready to enter the workforce in Wales."
