Essential that Welsh fishing community is fully represented on new MCZ Task & Finish Group - William Powell AM

November 7, 2012 4:27 PM

William Powell AM, Welsh Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Environment and Sustainable Development, has called on the Welsh Government to ensure that the Welsh fishing community is fully represented on the new Task & Finish Group which was announced today to consider the future of Marine Conservation Zones in Welsh waters.

William Powell, Assembly Member for Mid and West Wales, said:

"I am pleased that the Welsh Government has chosen to establish a special Task & Finish Group to consider the results of the consultation into Marine Conservations Zones around Wales.

Over recent months it has been abundantly clear that many within the Welsh fishing community feel that their views have not been respected in the zones planning process. Therefore it is essential that the Welsh fishing community is fully represented on the new MCZ Task & Finish Group.

Thus far the Welsh Government has not announced which specific fishing organisations will be invited to join 'stakeholder focus group'. I believe the Welsh Government must go further and ensure that fishing representatives have a place in the Task & Finish Team to ensure that MCZs are developed in a way which balances the needs of both our environment and the fishing industry."
