“Powys has received a disastrous funding settlement from the Welsh Government” – William Powell AM

January 9, 2013 4:57 PM

William Powell, Welsh Liberal Democrat Regional Assembly Member for Mid and West Wales, has criticised the Welsh Government for failing to understand the differing needs of rural areas such as Powys and the increased cost of living rural Welsh residents are forced to endure.

William Powell, Spokesperson for Rural Affairs, said:

"For six years running Powys County Council has received a disastrous funding settlement from the Welsh Government and this year is no exception. A rise of 0.3% compared to a Wales average of 1.5% will put the local authority under greater pressure than ever before.

It clearly demonstrates this Government's failure to understand the differing needs of rural areas and failure to grasp that delivering services in rural areas is often two to three times higher than in urban areas."

Kirsty Williams, Assembly Member for Brecon and Radnorshire, added:

"Year on year this Government continues to penalise Powys with a poor allowance in comparison to the rest of Wales. Year on year the Welsh Liberal Democrats continue to fight for a funding floor and a better settlement deal for rural areas."
