Welcome progress on Schmallenberg vaccine – William Powell AM

May 21, 2013 4:14 PM

William Powell AM, Welsh Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Rural Affairs, has welcomed today's news that the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) has issued the veterinary pharmaceutical company MSD Animal Health a licence to provide the new 'Bovilis SBV' vaccine.

William Powell AM, Mid and West Wales, said:

"The proliferation of Schmallenberg across Europe in the last year has been a matter of great concern to Welsh sheep and cattle farmers.

"As such I am pleased to hear that Welsh farmers will soon be able to benefit from the protection granted by use of the Bovilis SBV vaccine now that MSD Animal Health have been awarded the licence for production.

"Throughout the UK an estimated 1,753 farms have now tested positive for the virus.

"While access to a vaccine is a welcome step, we are still awaiting a response from the Welsh Government on how it intends to assist farmers with an effective vaccination programme so the industry can avoid further outbreaks in future."
