Recognising true bravery: William Powell AM joins veterans at Légion d'Honneur ceremony

Two brave war veterans from Pembrokeshire have been have been awarded l'Ordre National de la Légion d'Honneur by the French Président, François Hollande, for exceptional bravery in the Normandy Landings.

George Edward Owens of Pembroke Dock and Stanley Cyril Smith of Cilgerran were both presented with their medal by the French Ambassador to the UK, Her Excellency Madame Sylvie Bermann, at the Pierhead Building in Cardiff Bay last week.

Commenting, William Powell, Assembly Member for Mid & West Wales, said:

"It was indeed a proud day for the veterans, their families and friends - and it was an immense privilege to join them for the historic occasion. All 12 of the veterans receiving the award are real heroes of our time, and it is only right that their contribution is recognised in this way."
