New Cardigan Health Centre must be fully served by public transport
Progress continues to be made with the new integrated health care centre development due to be opened in Cardigan. The centre is set to provide health and social care services, together with third sector organisations, in brand new purpose-built premises.
Addressing the First Minister this week, William Powell, Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for Mid & West Wales, highlighted the importance of the new centre being fully accessible by public transport.
William Powell said:
"There have been long-standing concerns in Cardigan regarding the future delivery of health and social care services in the community. Many of these concerns were reflected in a petition brought to the National Assembly's Petitions Committee by the Cardigan Hospital and Community League of Friends, which called for future health provision in the Cardigan area to be safeguarded.
"Whilst disappointment remains that it will not include in patient beds, the new facility will provide services not only for residents of Ceredigion, but also for those in Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire. Given the integral role that the centre will play in delivering a whole range of healthcare packages, its accessibility by public transport is of great importance.
"The area served by the new health centre is deeply rural, and it is vital that residents from across the region are able to access the centre by public transport. I understand that initial discussions are underway with the operator of Cardigan town bus service regarding a drop-off point outside the new development, but that no formal agreements are in place. Whilst these discussions are ongoing, I would urge the decision-makers involved to ensure that the centre is made as accessible as possible, and that local residents are kept fully informed about the progress of the project.
